The M57 firing device — universally known as the ‘clacker’ — is the hand-held initiator used with the M18A1 Claymore directional fragmentation mine. This example is the training variant, identified by its blue colouring (live versions are olive/green), and is genuine British Army issue.
Clackers are used to teach soldiers the procedures for emplacing, testing and initiating Claymore mines without live ordnance. Training versions like this are used extensively on section attacks, defensive position training and combat engineering courses.
